Using A Consignment Store
Consignment stores are a way to make money from things in GOOD condition that you no longer want or need.

Consignment stores typically specialize – antiques, adult clothing, children’s clothing, exercise and sports equipment, furniture, etc.

Almost all consignment stores require making an appointment to bring your things in, so call first. For larger items like furniture, some stores will pick up your things and may charge you a small fee.

Clothing consignment stores take in-season items only, so bring in season-appropriate clothing for your appointment.

Each stores’ percentage share arrangement differs, be sure and read the contract they give you. For example, some stores’ split is 50/50, some are 60/40, etc.

You are responsible for picking up any unsold items at the end of the contract term (typically 60-90 days). Otherwise, your items will be donated to charity by the store and you forfeit the tax write-off.

Most consignment stores will pick through your things and take only the best items (those they think will sell), so here are some tips for getting the most out of your items that you want to consign:
-Bring in only those items that are in season and in sellable condition
-Clothing – no holes, stains, missing, buttons, etc.
-Bring clothes in on hangers
-Furniture and accessories – no damage, clean, and dust-free
-Antiques – if you have your original bill of sale, bring it with you to prove its value.
